Almost all countries of the world have imposed travel restrictions, including their complete prohibition to curb the spread of coronavirus, follows from a report by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
“In recent years, we have observed a tendency to simplify entry for foreign tourists, to more open countries. COVID-19 abruptly interrupted this. According to a new study, 96% of all destinations in the world or 209 countries have imposed travel restrictions in response to the pandemic. About 90 destinations completely or partially closed their borders for tourists, and another 44 closed their borders for citizens from certain countries, for example, China, Italy, South Korea and Iran, ”writes UNWTO.
According to the organization, from January 2020 to the beginning of April, all countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Middle and Middle East imposed travel restrictions, while in Europe the share of countries that closed the borders is 93%, in Northern and South America - 92%.
According to UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili, COVID-19 has influenced travel and tourism like no other event in history. “The authorities put health care in the first place by imposing travel restrictions. However, the suspension of tourism entails a reduction in the number of jobs, and sustainable economic growth achieved may come to naught. Therefore, we urge governments to constantly review travel restrictions, to lift or ease them when travel becomes safe, ”he concluded.
